About the Highland Council
The Highland Council is made up of 80 councillors representing 22 different wards. The current council was elected in 2007 and is run by a coalition of the Independants,Liberal Democrats and Labour.
The Highland Region is a two-tier region, with an elected council for the region as a whole and distinct elected councils for each of eight districts, Badenoch and Strathspey, Caithness, Inverness, Lochaber, Nairn , Ross and Cromarty, Skye and Lochalsh and Sutherland.
The Highland Council headquarters is located in Inverness with most previous district council offices retained as outstations.
The formation of the council is as follows:
Administration: Lib Dems 20, Labour 6, Independents 25
Opposition: SNP 17
