Stop the Crofting Bill

Blackface Sheep

Crofting is a vital and potentially vibrant part of the Highlands' & Islands' economy

In 1886, William Gladstone's Liberal Government passed the Crofters' Holdings Act, enshrining meaningful security of tenure for crofters, ensuring fair rents and allowing crofts to be passed down through families. The Act drew a line under centuries of injustice which had brought misery upon crofting families and helped to devastate the economic mainstay of our area.

The principles established by the 1886 Act have been the bedrock of crofting in the Highlands & Islands ever since, but the SNP Government's proposed Crofting Reform Bill now puts them under serious threat.

Alan MacRae and John Farquhar Munro are leading a campaign to have the Bill withdrawn so the core tenets of crofting law can be retained and passed on to another generation.
