Speed Up The By-Pass
On Wednesday (10th December), the SNP Government in Edinburgh announced that it will not fund the by-pass at any time during plans which stretch right through to 2032. SNP politicians who promised that the road would be built before 2012 now propose plans which will see it sidelined for at least a quarter of a century. After almost two thousand local people signed petitions asking the Transport Minister to keep his party's promise and complete the Trunk Link Road, I am deeply disappointed by this set back. Many other projects are promised in the 3,800 page document which Ministers published, and some of them are very welcome. But the Government has produced a transport strategy which contains no dates and no clear budgets. The upgrading of the A9 to dual carriageway is important to our area, so it is a real shame that the proposals are so vague and that dualling in the Highlands is relegated to a second phase. I will work hard to get proper commitments to the early action our region needs for its key rail, road and air links. But, above all else, we cannot allow the rejection of the Inverness by-pass to stand. At a time of economic crisis, this is an announcement which will cost the Highland Capital and our region dearly in terms of jobs and future prosperity. Please help us to keep the pressure up by signing our petition, joining our facebook group, or writing to the local press - because together we can still get this disastrous decision overturned.
