Stop the Highland Highway Robbery
Local Lib Dems have launched a Highlands-wide fight to make fuel duty fairer. The move follows an attempt by Liberal Democrat MPs to cut duty on fuel for remote areas during voting on Gordon Brown's latest budget. The measure - recently reaffirmed within Lib Dem plans for fairer, greener taxes - was blocked by Tory and Labour MPs voting together. Danny Alexander said: "Fuel duty has been raised many times over to encourage people from cars on to other forms of transport. Yet, for many people across the Highlands, there are no other options for most journeys. They travel longer distances, and they are already paying significantly more for their fuel. They are being hit three times. "It is not good enough for the Treasury to do nothing, and watch the money roll in. For people across our area that means fuel poverty. It is also a serious handicap to rural businesses. "The Highland Highway Robbery must stop. You can help by signing our petition and ordering your free car sticker today." Danny Alexander promised to keep fighting at Westminster: "Charles Kennedy and I will keep working to change the Government's policy. Green taxes must be adjusted to target behaviour which can be changed. An urban policy should not be allowed to squeeze the budgets of Highland households. "In the long run, both fuel duty and road tax should be replaced with fairer road user pricing. That will allow tax to reflect the type of vehicle, the distance travelled, the extent of other transport options and the degree of congestion on the roads used."
