UK Govt urged to intervene following interception of Global Sumud Flotilla
Jamie Stone MP has joined MSP David Green in calling for urgent UK Government action after writing to the Foreign Secretary over the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla and the reported detention of Scottish constituents aboard the vessel.
The humanitarian mission, which was attempting to deliver aid to Gaza, included participants from the Ullapool and Lochbroom community.
Mr Stone and Mr Green expressed their “deep concern” over the loss of contact with those aboard the vessel after communications were disrupted while it was reportedly operating in international waters.
It has now been confirmed that a number of their constituents have been detained by Israeli authorities. In their letter, Mr Stone and Mr Green confirmed that they have raised several constituents’ cases separately via the dedicated phone line and have been in contact to request consular support.
They also called on the UK Government to urgently confirm the location and condition of all British nationals involved and confirm that they have access to legal representation and medical assistance where required.
Mr Stone said:
“The families of those aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla are enduring an agonising period of uncertainty. They need answers and reassurance that every effort is being made to protect their loved ones.
“These individuals were participating in an aid mission and their interception draws attention to the wider reality that Gazans remain in the grip of a man-made humanitarian catastrophe. The Israeli Government must urgently and fully reopen all aid routes into Gaza.
“This is the second time I have now written to the Foreign Office and I hope to be able to reassure my constituents very soon on the status of their loved ones. The safety and wellbeing of my constituents will always be my first priority.”
Mr Green, who previously worked for the international development agency Christian Aid, said:
“For the families and friends of those detained aboard the flotilla, this is a deeply distressing time, and answers are urgently needed.
“In an increasingly uncertain world, we must stand shoulder to shoulder with humanitarians, ensure they can operate safely, and that international law is respected.
“My priority remains the safety and wellbeing of my constituents. Jamie Stone and I will continue pressing the UK Government to take urgent action on their behalf.”
