Ross Costigane, the Highland Liberal Democrat candidate for the forthcoming Cromarty Firth by-election, says he is determined to “bring a fresh, energetic perspective to the council on behalf of local people.”

Mr Costigane, who has worked in several research and administrative roles after graduating from the University of Stirling and choosing to move back home to Easter Ross, says he is focusing his efforts on local issues.

The Highland Liberal Democrat candidate will campaign to invest in school estates, improve road safety on the A9, increase access to NHS dentists and GPs, and build more affordable homes.

At the Cromarty Firth by-election last year, the Highland Liberal Democrats topped the poll with 481 votes but were closely followed by the SNP with 403. John Edmondson was elected to represent the ward, alongside Sinclair Coghill.

In setting out his stall, Ross Costigane said: “I’m excited to be standing as the Highland Liberal Democrat candidate for Cromarty Firth. I am ready to bring a fresh, energetic perspective to the council on behalf of local people.

“I love the Highlands; it is my home. However, like too many people I look around and see our communities neglected and overlooked by those in power. I got into politics with a determination to help.

“My commitment is to focus on the issues that matter to local people; from school buildings that give young people the best start in life to upgrading our roads and delivering reliable transport that works for local people.”

Cllr John Edmondson, who was elected in the Cromarty Firth last year, said: “Since I was elected, we have seen the SNP-led administration increase people’s bills well in excess of inflation and to the detriment of too many. We need people like Ross to hold the Highland Council to account and ensure people’s worries are heard.”

David Green, the party’s Holyrood candidate for Caithness, Sutherland, and Ross, added: “Ross is part of a growing number of young people coming to the Highland Liberal Democrats. You can see his passion for serving our local communities and I know he will give 110% to helping people.”

Longstanding Liberal Democrat MP Jamie Stone also welcomed his party’s candidate. He said: “In a contest that could once again prove neck and neck between the Liberal Democrats and the SNP, I am convinced Ross has the enthusiasm and energy needed to make the difference.”
