MSP David Green backs Blythswood’s Shoe Box Appeal that ‘sends a powerful message of hope’
Caithness, Sutherland and Ross MSP David Green says that Blythswood’s shoebox appeal “carries a powerful message of hope” to those most in need.
He was speaking after visiting Blythswood's packing facility in Evanton where the 2026 Shoe Box Appeal is now under way.
Last winter, more than 80,000 shoeboxes were distributed across Eastern Europe to people living in poverty or experiencing trauma and exploitation.
A further 1800 more were filled and delivered locally in Pakistan after being funded through the charity’s online shoebox appeal - a gift of £28 pays for two boxes to be filled and delivered in Pakistan.
Each shoebox contains practical gifts, such as a woolly hat and scarf which can make a real difference to people facing harsh European winters, often without reliable heating.
In 2025, one-third of the boxes went to Ukraine, where airstrikes cause prolonged power cuts and winter temperatures can fall to -15°C. Warm clothing provides immediate help for those experiencing such conditions.
Boxes also reached low-income households in Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Kosovo, Moldova, Romania and Serbia.
Blythswood’s local partners distribute these gifts to some of the poorest people in their communities.
David Green, Caithness, Sutherland and Ross MSP said:
“A shoebox may seem like a small gift, but it can make a real difference to someone facing poverty or trauma. Alongside the practical items, it carries a powerful message of hope.
“I remember when my sisters and I were growing up, we would get our shoeboxes ready at church, filling them with gifts and essentials for children in need. In recent years, while working for Christian Aid, I visited Odesa and met with Blythswood’s partner, Heritage Ukraine. I saw first-hand the difference this appeal makes to children and families affected by the conflict. Those memories have stayed with me.
“I am proud to support Blythswood – my thanks to the staff, volunteers, and the generosity of their supporters. If you can help, please do. Every shoebox is an opportunity to bring a little comfort and hope to a child this Christmas.”
Blythswood’s Shoe Box Appeal Co-ordinator, Paul Algeo said:
“Every shoebox is a personal gift, thoughtfully packed by someone who wants to make a difference. Through these boxes, we are letting people who are facing difficult circumstances know they are being remembered. Thank you to everyone who fills a box, gives online or volunteers their time to help make this appeal possible”
