A petition has been launched to save the under-threat Tain Royal Academy Community Complex (TRACC) facilities that serve the Tain and Easter Ross community.

Connie Ramsay, a Commonwealth Games medallist and local Lib Dem by-election candidate for Tain and Easter Ross, and her party’s Holyrood candidate, David Green, are urging the public to make their voice heard and back sign the petition.

The only local swimming pool in Tain is at risk of closure amidst a SNP-Independent-led Highland Council review. All options put forward for the future of the facility - including the gym and fitness classes - have been met with strong objections by the local community.

The Highland Liberal Democrats have already added their voice to the campaign by urging the Scottish Government to find the money to keep TRACC open following reports Highland Council advised a stakeholder meeting that there is no funding in place to replace the pool.

Connie Ramsay, Highland Liberal Democrat candidate for the Tain and Easter Ross by-election, said:

“This vital local facility is more than just bricks and mortar. It provides a space for swimming lessons, fitness, wellbeing, and community activity for people of all ages across Tain and the surrounding area.

“My commitment in this campaign is to focus on the issues that matter to local people. My first act, if elected, will be to hand this petition in and make clear to the SNP-Independent administration that our leisure facilities at TRACC must be saved.”

David Green, Scottish Liberal Democrat candidate for Caithness, Sutherland & Ross, added:

“The community has already rejected all the options that were consulted on and made clear they want the local facilities to remain open. It is no surprise then that this is the number one issue coming up on the doors.

“All credit to the community activists and the steering group who are working on a way forward. Working with Connie, we will continue to ensure the public can make their voice heard.”

ENDS.
